Miçanga: when small beads tell stories of great craftsmanship

In Brazil, they are called “miçangas”. These small glass beads have become an important material in the artistic expression of several Indigenous peoples.

Yet those used in the creations selected by Amazonikaa do not come from the Amazon: they are made in the Czech Republic.

One material, many expressions

In the hands of artisans, Miçangas are assembled into bracelets, necklaces and earrings with very different shapes, colors and compositions.

Amazonikaa works with artisans from different Indigenous peoples and traditional communities in Brazil. Their techniques and creations therefore cannot be reduced to a single style.

Each piece should be understood through its artisan and origin when these are documented.

A living culture

The history of Miçanga is also a reminder that living craftsmanship cannot be reduced to the origin of a material.

A small glass bead made in Europe can become, in the hands of an artisan in Brazil, a medium for a deeply singular artistic expression.

This meeting between material, gesture and creation is what Amazonikaa seeks to share in Europe, while highlighting the artisans behind the jewelry.
